Google have now included Kenya in its gmail chat to sms service, which means that Gmail users in Kenya can now send free chats to mobile numbers. The chats arrive as SMS and the recipient can reply with the reply showing up in the Gmail chat window.
People texting from their mobile phones to Gmail chat will be charged normal sms rates by their provider, but chats to sms sent from Gmail are free.
At the moment the service is in partnership with Sararicom, but will eventually support all cellular networks in Kenya.
Contact mobile numbers can be stored in Gmail to make it easy to send free sms.
The service has already been launched in Senegal and Ghana.
