HeyWire is a new free international text messaging service for both PC and Mac, and for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. HeyWire have a global coverage – at the moment they have coverage in 114 countries – and are still adding countries to the list that they support for free sms. Many African and Middleeastern countries are supported.
Text messages between HeyWire users are free, and you can text to non users (in supported countries). People can text back to your HeyWire number, but they will be charged their normal sms rate to do so. If all your friends and family become HeyWire users, all texts will be free.
When you register with HeyWire you are given a phone number which also acts as your ID. Your friends and family can use this number to text you, and as the app has push notification you will receive an alert when an sms has arrived.
You will need a data plan to use the service from a mobile device, unless you’re in a wi-fi area, so keep in mind that if you use HeyWire when abroad you will incur roaming charges (unless you’re using wi-fi), or you buy a local SIM to eliminate roaming.
The application also lets you send Chats, IM, use Facebook chat and Twitter.
Most major languages are supported including character based ones, so you can text in your own language. You can use the app for texting over a mobile network or with wi-fi.
HeyWire for the PC and Mac is still in beta, but you can register now to be notified of its pre-release.
